DJ Liability Insurance

Why do you need Public Liability Insurance

It is a legal requirement of any business to hold at least a minimum level of Public Liability Insurance which covers them against a claim for damages to any person or persons attending a function, who becomes injured through negligence as a direct or indirect action of the D.J

Consider the everyday risks posed to even the most careful of Mobile D.J's. The risk of somebody walking into your lighting rig. A badly placed speaker overbalancing and falling onto the dancefloor, Champagne splashing onto live equipment, a stilleto heel through your mains cables. These are just some examples of why you should get insured.

Fortunately for most D.J's the chance of an accident happening is minimised provided that common sense is followed, however what would happen if an accident did occur and a member of the public took you to court?.

Even the most minor of injuries can warrant a few £1000 compensation, add to that the claimants time off work, medical bills and court fee's and you could end up working for a long time, just to pay off their claim. For a more serious injury leading to permanent disability or death, you could end up selling your home in order pay a claim against you.

Having Public Liability insurance is a must in this business. It's a small price to pay for peace of mind, for you and your clients. In the days of no win - no fee solicitors, it's just not worth the risk to do gigs without it.

By not having PLI, you could even lose work. Some Large Hotels and council owned buildings now require to see evidence of your cover before they'll even let you set up!.

How Much Insurance Cover is needed

The law states that a minimum cover is required to comply with legislation for small businesses. However there is no definition of the amount that is indicated by "minimum". Public Liability for D.J's should be no less than £1 million worth of cover however £2 or £5 Million is recommended and is often the amount stipulated by Hotels.

How Much does PLI Cost?

This depends on where you go and how much cover you need. £90 - £150 a year is average for £2 million - £5 million worth of cover.

Where can I obtain cover?

If you insure your Disco Equipment through DJ Guard - then your disco equipment policy will include £1 Million worth of Public Liability cover for FREE

However if you require a Higher Level of Public Liability insurance then MusicGuard offer LiabilityGuard which is available in £1 Million, £2 Million and £5 Million policies, and is arranged for Mobile Entertainers.
