If
you are venturing into providing a mobile disco service, at some point, you'll
likely encounter a venue that requires you to provide proof of Public Liability
Insurance before you can set-up disco equipment and perform!
Public
hire and Hotel venues can set the level of indemnity required, so it's a good
idea to research the area of intended service cover to gauge an idea of how
much 'PLI' you will need.
Although
'PLI' is not a legal requirement, because venues can set their own criteria, it
is worth acquiring, else the mobile DJ would lose the opportunity of working
the venue and any other that insists on the service holding PLI, and should a
claim arise, the DJ wouldn't have to risk re-mortgaging their home or even
selling-up to pay damages!
What
needs to be understood is that DJ Public Liability Insurance will essentially
cover the registered DJ policy holder against a clam for damages. So
individuals or groups of people at a function who suffer injury by direct
actions or through negligence on the DJs part will be covered in the event of
an accident.
Wedding
venues are increasingly requesting that DJs and entertainment services supply
details of PLI cover in advance, so before committing availability to a couples
'big day', it would be wise for the mobile DJ to get every requirement in place
or their business reputation will undoubtedly take a nose-dive before it can
really take off.
Experienced
mobile DJs as well as newbie DJs face the possibility of a claim at any
function because everyday risks are not confined just to Hotels or Public Hire
venues. If an accident did occur, with liability insurance cover in place, the
risk of an expensive court case paid for out of the DJs own pocket would be
more than diminished.
You've
probably seen the 'No win, no fee' TV adverts which help compensate many
thousands of pounds for minor injuries to victims of accidents, so consider the
outcome for serious injury or disability as a result of action/s by a DJ. Lets
not forget that costs such as medical bills, compensation for trauma and quite
possibly loss of earnings can all be claimed for. Of course, death maybe the
final chapter for the unfortunate individual who can not physically make a
claim, but the victims family would most likely pursue a case, along with any
fines that the Health and Safety Executive see fit to seek. There's always a
possibility of accident, even for the most careful, mindful DJ.
For
example:- Lighting can fall from gantry, third parties can trip over cables,
electrical equipment or power cables can cause electric shocks, speakers could
cause hearing damage, smoke machines could cause breathing difficulties for
some, lasers and strobe lighting can trigger forms of epileptic fits, bubble
machines can catalyst slippery surfaces, tripods can fall over, rigging can be
overbalanced, flight-cases can cause trip hazards, etc.
