Compatible site linking:

This is where you have a link from your site to others of a similar subject and they in turn have a link back to you. This is really the essence of the 'web' as it creates a common thread between like for like sites which the search engines reward.

I'm not suggesting that you put your immediate competitors on your site but discos from outside your area, wedding sites and directories, DJ and entertainment directories can all provide useful inbound links into your site (provided they are relevant to your site).

Most directories will allow you to link for free provided you have a return link on your site (which you would want to do anyway). It can be a time consuming process so first of all compile a couple of narratives about your service (one short and one longer - up to 600 words). Keep these in word or notepad and then simply copy/paste in the required areas on the directories submission page. Some may also allow a logo, banner or picture so don't waste the opportunity and have these available as well.

Normally at the bottom of the submission page is some code to paste into your site for the return link. I normally try to do this immediately because it's easy to forget and with some they check for their back-link before yours goes live - if they can't find it you've wasted your time.

DMOZ (The Open Directory Project) is also worth considering. Each site submitted is checked by an editor so it can take several months. You do have to make sure that your site is complete before submission (an Under Construction page will mean it's rejected) plus it also has to be submitted into the correct category.
